Seven Free Ways to Promote Your Blog

So you've finally started that blog you've always wanted. You have the occasional reader, but not the type of traffic you'd hoped for. There's a quick fix for that - promote your blog. Here are seven free ways to do that with little or no cost to you except for, of course, your time.

1. Twitter - Tweet your latest blog posting on Twitter.

2. Facebook - Link to your latest blog posting on Facebook or, better yet, create a business page and automatically link it to Facebook so it updates whenever your blog does.

3. Linked In - If you have a profile on Linked In, you can also have your profile automatically updated with your latest blog postings.

4. Biznik.com - Add your blog address to your Biznik profile.

5. E-mail signature - Add your blog address to your e-mail signature.

6. Marketing materials - The next time you update your marketing materials (biz cards, letterhead, brochure, etc.), be sure to include your blog address.

7. Encourage comments - On one of my blogs (http://www.ilovekent.net), I offer a monthly drawing for three $10 Kent Station gift cards for qualifying posts. Winners are chosen randomly from those who post each month.

10 Tips to Writing Better Marketing Materials

When searching for a topic to write about, I came across another great article on Biznik.com, this one from Lynn Baldwin-Rhoades: 10 Tips to Writing Better Marketing Materials. In this article, she offers advice from other writers on their top 10 tips for writing better marketing materials. My favorite tip is from Molly Dee Anderson who suggests, "Deliver your message plainly in the language of your audience." Which tip is your favorite?

Always Be Prepared to Recruit New Clients

The other day I was asked to speak at a networking function. With just two days notice, I scrambled to put together a set of marketing materials for those who might want more information about my services. I had some older versions already prepared, but I needed to update them. How could I have been better prepared?

On a quarterly basis - or more often if needed - put together "recruitment packets" to tell prospective clients more about what you do. Include a business card, bio sheet and menu of services along with any brochures or other printed material you have on hand.

I like to put mine in a simple colored folder that matches my logo and has space for a business card. I stock up on my favorite color - red - during back-to-school sales. That way I can get the best price, and I can find plenty of folders that match by business cards!

By putting together these packets ahead of time, you'll be ready on the fly if you have a last minute meeting or function to attend!

Helpful Hint, Compliments of Donald Trump

I'll admit it - I love watching Celebrity Apprentice! Not only was I fascinated by Gene Simmons and his marketing savvy, but I learned a thing or two from "The Donald" as well. One tip I learned from Donald Trump was to always call the phone numbers on your marketing materials before having them printed. It's a simple, fail-safe way to check your copy for accuracy.

I now do the same thing with web links in press releases in my materials, too. A quick click will tell you if the link is active or if there is a typo in it. Simple advice but invaluable!

Your Marketing Should Be Original - Like You!

Lately I've been asked by several prospective clients to create or duplicate another company's marketing materials (e.g., brochures, training manuals). Not only are there legal and ethical issues involved (copyright, for example), but each business is as unique as its owner(s) and their marketing materials should be branded to reflect that uniqueness - from the layout, logo and design all the way down to the copy.

If you are creating or redoing marketing materials for your business, explore the materials of your competitors to see what elements you like and what you don't like. But when you sit down with your graphic designer and copywriter, make sure the materials reflect YOUR BUSINESS, not someone else's!
